When coming up with a game plan for your next project, the best way is to incorporate all of the design elements you want and that takes time, to plan and gather inspiration beforehand – all of this is key to creating an aesthetically pleasing space. Transferring all of your ideas onto a mood board really helps to bring your thoughts to life and really allows you to see what works, envisioning how you’d like it to look, considering all the colours and textures. But what is a mood board?
What is a mood board?
A mood board is basically a brainstorm session that is visually represented and is used as a starting point in the design process. It allows the designer, whether it’s you or someone else, to gather their thoughts and begin to develop their concepts. It’s typically a collage that consists of images, text and samples of objects in a composition of the choice of the mood board creator. Having more than one concept with examples of various directions that the design could go as well as a few different colour options.
What are ways to make mood boards?
Thankfully in this day and age, technology provides us with the tools to create mood boards that are incredibly in-depth, offering various templates to input images and colours – this provides a blank slate to combine a variety of media assets to create a visual. Maybe you’d rather tactile the approach and assemble your mood board by hand, physically working with the different textures and chosen elements. You can integrate newspaper clippings, magazine cut-outs, online photos or some that you’ve taken, even printed samples or material swatches.
All of these things can help you decide which way you want to go before you get started; no ideas are out of bounds, no style too provocative – just be honest with yourself and get creative!
